It’s pretty weird actually because I am writing this post as I am sat on the exercise bike in the gym. Something I never thought I would be doing but I have just witnessed something occur in the gym that I thought I would share.
A couple of girls have just entered the gym, one was wearing make-up and one was not. A guy in the gym turned round to the makeup wearing girl and asked her why she was wearing makeup in the gym and before she even had a chance to respond he started listing off a list of reasons why she shouldn’t be wearing it. He told her that she is going to have horrendous skin, that everybody in the gym was going to judge her and that she should just go and wash it off. The two girls looked lost when he walked away without giving them a chance to respond.
The makeup wearing girl then turned round to her friend and told her she now wanted to go home and forget about working out. Unfortunately for the guy who decided to but his nose in, he decided to get on the treadmill next to myself. This is where I decided I need to talk to him myself (couldn’t help myself). When he got on I asked him if all of that was really necessary and before he had a chance to respond I decided to carry on (like he did to them).
It was at this point I decided to list off why he was wrong. I started by telling him that I too had a little makeup on and that was due to going straight from work to the gym and even though I had used wipes it hadn’t necessarily wiped it all off, I told him how I refused to waste time before my gym session having a deep cleanse of my face when it was just going to get sweaty and horrible from the gym which I would just cleanse after and maybe this is the exact same this girl was feeling.
I then went on to my next point that maybe this young girl is that self conscious that she only feels comfortable going out in public with makeup on and due to his idiotic comment she may never enter the gym again. I explained that sometimes girls have days where they need to wear makeup to boost their confidence a little and maybe the only way she is comfortable enough to come to the gym is to wear this makeup and thanks to him she may never go back to one.
My last point to him was that he had no right to walk up to a stranger and start judging them. Yea it is always said that wearing makeup in the gym is a big ‘no no’ but sometimes I even do it myself because I do not feel good enough to go without it. This girl was only wearing light makeup and it was not like she had big smokey eyes and bright red lips.
After I spoke he didn’t give me a response so instead I put my headphones back on and carried on with my own workout but this was not until I watched he turn off his own machine and walk back over to the two young girls and apologise.
Sometime you have to remember that people do certain things for a reason and by sitting there judging them is just making you look like the fool and not them. If somebody wants to wear makeup to the gym, let them. If somebody wants to wear a jumper and joggers to cover themselves up, let them. It is up to them and not you.
