A lot of people who know me, know that I am constantly moaning about my sister and she is constantly moaning about me. Despite this, my sister and I have become loser as we have become older and there are a lot of things that she has taught me over the years and I decided to put it in a letter.
Dear Big Sis,
I want to say thank you, as much as I moan about you and tell you I hate you, you have taught me then anybody else every has.
It never mattered who I brought home, friend or boyfriend, my sister always had something negative to say about them. I used to hate you for it! But as I got older I realised that you were doing this for my benefit and not actually for the fun of it. Growing up, there has only been a handful of my friends that you actually liked and only one boyfriend that you would actually associate yourself with. It turned out that you were only doing these things because you cared about me, you didn’t think that they were good enough, you wanted somebody she could trust. You have always been good at reading people, something I have never been good at, and you would always find a reason to not like a person and a reason why I deserved better people in my life. I hate to admit it but 99% of the time you was right!
Growing up, I always thought that I was second best – no matter what I was doing or who I was with! But you would always make sure that I was involved and that I would be first. You used to tell me that I should put myself first, something I have never been very good at doing. As I have got older, I have understood why you wanted me to do this and have tried so much harder to put myself first and look after myself before people who wouldn’t put me first!
You are one of the most motivated people I have ever met, in a way it is kind of annoying! Whatever you want to do, you find a way to do it. You pushe me to do things that I never expected myself to do. You was the person who encourage me to join university whilst also working. You was the person who lifted the weights up in the gym without me knowing to prove my body could take it. You were the person who taught me that I could do whatever job I wanted if I worked for it. You are the reason I am doing the things I am doing on a daily basis!
Whilst telling me to work for what I want and not to give up on my dreams, you were also the person that told me that I had to have fun whilst doing these things. Whatever you do, you do with a smile. You taught me that it doesn’t have to be all work, it can be all play if you are doing something that you love. This is how you have your fun and if you don’t find everyday fun then you’re not doing what you love and change what you are doing!
I have to admit I am a very laid back person and couldn’t actually name you a time where I have been stressed out. This is due to that annoying thing I call you, my big sister. I have seen you when taking your GCSE’s, I’ve seen you when you dropped out of sixth form after one year, in a job where you wasn’t earning a lot of money, I’ve seen you when she has been out of work and had bills to pay, yet I have never seen you stressed. You have shown me that if something is meant to be then it will be. Most importantly, you have taught me that I am only human and if something doesn’t get done then it doesn’t get done, don’t stress over it!
The most important lesson you have ever taught me, is to trust! You taught me to trust you and showed me that no matter what you will always be there. Whether we hate each other at that moment in time or whether we haven’t had a good conversation in weeks, you have helped make me the person I am today and have been my inspiration for most of my life! I hate to admit it but I am thankful for you, my sister, and would not change you for the world (well, maybe a little).
