So this week I finally went for my first smear test and decided to share my smear test experience. Even though I turned 25 at the beginning of October, due to getting appointments at appropriate times and my cycle, I have only just been able to go. I decided to share my experience and also why you should be going for your smear if you have not yet been.
What Is A Smear Test?
A smear test is a cervical screening which checks the health of your cervix. Most believe that it is a screening for cancer but this is not true. It is a test that can help prevent cancer! When going for a smear, a small sample of your cells are collected from your cervix and sent off for testing. You then receive a letter with your results on whether you’re clear or if more tests are needed.
Start of My Smear
I have decided to give my own view of what happened at my smear. So yours may be slightly different but they all should be done in a similar way.
When I first entered the room, I was asked to sit down to confirm some details. I also had to give details of when my last period started. Once we finished talking, she directed me to a bed behind a curtain and told me when I was ready to undress down below and lie on the bed. The thing I did like was, the nurse gave me a sheet to put over myself to make me feel less exposed. Even though I was exposed it did help a lot! Once I had undressed and lay down I informed the nurse I was ready. She then came in and was telling me what she was going to do and if I was uncomfortable at any point she would stop.
During the Smear
She then talked me through the speculum that she was going to use. Also explaining that there were different sizes if the average one hurt. I was then asked me to put my feet flat and bend my knees (so my feet were up by my bum). Then she directed me to separate my knees. When ready she put in the speculum and opened it slightly so that she could check inside. She then showed me the soft brush that would be used to collect the cells. She did inform me that there would be a strange feeling when collecting the cells. When she was finished with the brushes she did a second check to make sure that the brush had not irritated my cervix.
After The Test
When complete, she gave me privacy to get back dressed. Then when I came out, the nurse explained that I should receive my results in a couple weeks in the post. She then went on to talk about the weather and made the whole thing very comfortable.
Have you had a smear test? If so, what was your experience like?
