For the past 4 years we have all been obsessed with watching a load of good looking single people in a villa. Wondering whether they would find love or just hoping for a bit of cash. There is no denying that it is a certain stereotype that appears on the show. So now season 5 has kicked off, is Love Island losing its mojo?
Every year seems to moulding into one. Finding people who are their ‘type on paper’ or they end up putting ‘all their eggs in one basket’. Is it all getting a little boring?
Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably aware that two contestants from Love Island have taken their own lives. You will also find majority of the contestants openly speaking out about their own stress and anxiety that they have been left with after the show.
I have always been one to say ‘they know their lives are going to change’ ‘they shouldn’t sign up if they don’t want the fame and attention’ ‘they know they are going to receive hate’. But that will not stop their mental health being affected. They may believe they are strong enough to cope with it. But they are not.
Sophie Gradon was a competitor in the second series of Love Island. Unfortunately, she took her own life in 2018. She suffered from a lot of mental health issues. Before she passed she openly spoke about her battle with anxiety and depression on social media. It was later stated that she never received support after the show when she was thrown into the lime light.
Mike Thalassitis took his own life at the start of the year. It is also said by family and friends that Mike also suffered with his mental health after the show. After being labeled as ‘Muggy Mike’ and being given this bad reputation, it is no surprise that Mike was suffering.
So we have now met this years contestants. But are they really who we should have on the show? We have siblings of celebrities and people who are already insta famous. So have Love Island really chose the correct people for the show?
But what type of producers has this show actually got? When they are making comments on how they have chose attractive people because of the image of Love Island and these are apparently the type of people we want to see on our screens falling in love. Yes, they are attractive but why are only expected to watch these insta models and influencers?
I will be the first to put my hands up and say that I am happy to have Tommy Fury on my screen every night but what about every other man in the country? A man doesn’t have to look like Tommy to be attractive or make good TV.
So every year we get promised by the Love Island producers that we are going to receive more diversity on who they send into the villa. It always seems to be men with muscle than the sea and women who never have to shop in the curvy section. This year they promised more curvy women, they have placed one female in who they class as ‘curvy’ and I still think she is way too tiny to have to shop in that section.
It is understandable that the producers put a load of ‘sexy singles’ into the villa but what is their definition of sexy? Why isn’t sexy curves? Not everybody has the same view on what attractiveness is.
Personally, my self-esteem drops when I am watching Love Island. We already suffer everyday comparing ourselves to people on social media and now millions of people are watching these beautiful people on the tv every night and it is not good for us. We start wanting that bikini body and picking out everything that is wrong with us. Why aren’t my legs longer? I wish my boobs were bigger. I wish my boobs were smaller. Why isn’t my bum that perky? How do I get abs like that?
The questions that we fill our minds with are never ending.
Will I Be Watching?
There is no question on whether or not I will be watching this series. Of course I will. Yes there are things about this program that get me wound up and make me moan like hell. That doesn’t mean I do not enjoy the show. I have loved watching this shows for the past however many years. But I do think that if they are going to continue this show over the next few years they need to make some changes.
There are many other countries that have taken to this show and created their own versions. So with more and more people all over the world watching it, it is time they made a change.
Will you be watching Love Island this year?
Do you think they need to make any changes?
