At the start of the year I started suffering from panic attacks and ever since I’ve been learning how to control my anxiety. I never expected to be someone who suffers from mental health but unfortunately I am. Luckily for me, I only suffer from a mild case of anxiety unlike most. I still felt the need to find ways to help keep it under control so that it does not progress into something more. These methods work for me and may not work for everybody.
I always used to laugh when people suggest I meditated because I thought that it would be impossible for me to do so. I started by downloading the ‘Head Space’ app that everybody talks about. Although you have to pay for most of the app you do get 30 basic sessions free. You are also able to use the first session of most of the programs to try. I started off by just using the 3 minute sessions and slowly moved up to 5 minutes. So if you are anything like me and always laughed off the thought of meditation, trust me it works!
I know many people can’t have pets due to allergies or generally not having the lifestyle for it. Fortunately for me, I have two beautiful dogs that always keep me calm. If I am ever having an anxious day or can feel a panic starting I will go and snuggle my dog. Even if I just sit next to my dog and stroke it, it makes me instantly calm down. I can now understand why people use dogs for anxiety and it is definitely something I would recommend to people who suffer if they are able to care for one.
I know people struggle to find time. I find crocheting so relaxing it is unreal. I love being able to turn some wool into something like a teddy or a monkey. I think the counting and concentration for the crocheting helps to clear my mind as I do not think about anything else. I would recommended people to find a creative activity to learn and distract their minds for 10-20 minutes here and there.
For me personally, exercise helps me to release anxiety. It doesn’t matter if it is releasing all that energy by sprinting on the treadmill or pushing your body to it’s limits with some weights. Showing your body what it is capable of is sometimes what you need to help show that your body can be more powerful than your mind.
Go outside/Open a Window
I know that when you are feeling anxious you don’t want to go outside. Sometimes this is what you need to do. If you get to the point where you cannot go outside, just open a window. Just going and standing by an open window you will feel that outside air. Show your brain that you are not trapped inside and that you can still breathe.
Turn off Notifications
Social media is very damaging for the brain and your anxiety. I know sometimes it is tempting to just pick up your phone and have a scroll through instagram especially when it has become a habit to do so. So instead, just turn off your notifications, this means that you will not pick up your phone as much.
