There is nothing worse than going through a break-up, whether it is after a short or long relationship. It tends to be even harder to watch a close friend or loved one to have their heart broken and it is so hard to help a friend through a break-up. It doesn’t matter how much you tell them ‘it’s not you, it’s them’ they are not going to believe you. How to help a friend through a break-up is hard.
After a break-up, a person only ever thinks about all the good memories and everything nice their ex ever did for them. They never tend to think about the bad times or when they have cried because of their other half throughout the relationship. There isn’t actually a lot that can be done to heal a deal with a break-up within 24 hours but you can help them with the healing process.
The easiest thing is to be there when you help a friend through a break-up. At the moment they feel like they have nobody because the person they love is now out of their life. This means that you need to be there for them as much as you can. Whether it is a text, phone call or going to their house in the middle of the night. As nice as a text or phone call is you need to make sure they know you there for them face-to-face. If they can physically see that you are there for them and they still have people who love them around them, they will realise that they are not alone.
No matter what, nobody can say no to a good night in. You do not need to take your friend out to get wasted and have a one night stand to try and rebound. All you need to do is go round with a bottle of wine or two and order so much food you can barely eat it. Put on a good comedy and show them that they don’t need their ex to have a date night. A friend date can be worth so much more than they can image. Keeping them busy with a movie also shows them that you are there for them and they do not need to speak or keep talking about what happened but they know that you are there for them in other ways.
Have A Good Cry!
You haven’t gone through the break-up yourself but you can feel your friends pain. Let them cry it out and if you want to join them! There is nothing wrong with crying and it can actually be healthy for you. It is a lot better to help your friend through a break-up if you can let them express it. They are trying to stay strong all day and you need to be the person to let them be vulnerable around.
We all want the best for our friends. Even if you did not like their ex and think they are better off without them, don’t tell them that. You need to understand what you friend is going through. They thought that their ex was the one, the one who they were going to marry, the one they were going to have children with. Understand what they have just lose, whether it is a good thing or not.
Find Out What They Need!
Everybody is different. After a break-up some people need to feel loved and surrounded by people, whilst others like to be alone in their bedroom. Remind yourself who is going through the break-up and let things be on their terms for a while. It isn’t going to last forever. Some get over it in days or weeks where as others can take months. Make sure that you understand what they need and do not smoother them or are not there for them enough.
