Thinking about getting a puppy always seems like such a great idea. But, is getting a puppy really the right thing to do for your lifestyle. People usually get puppies because they are cute. Or they get them because they want company. Unfortunately, these aren’t always the best reasons.
When Are You Ready For A Puppy?
Everybody loves the idea of getting a pup. But they never really know when they are ready for one. If you are going to get a puppy you need to make sure you have the time. Puppies aren’t just a one year pet. You need to ensure that your lifestyle is ready for a dog for the next 10 years or more. When you get the puppy, you need to make sure you have the time to train it. Puppies don’t become clean over night (trust me I know). Some pups can take longer than size months to train.
Is everybody else in the house ready? Having a dog is a big commitment, you can’t just leave it when you go on holiday. You can’t spend a lot of weekends away. A puppy needs love and attention from everybody. It cannot feel like somebody in that household does not want it there. Dogs are very clever animals and will sense when they are not wanted.
Are you financially ready? Dogs are not cheap! I don’t just mean when you purchase the animal. When you have the dog you need to be ready to pay quite a bit out. It is highly recommended that you ensure your dog, which doesn’t actually cover all pet bills. You need to ensure it has a bed and they have toys to play with. Your dog requires many injections and treatments throughout its life. They require flea and worming treatment monthly.
Are you actually prepared for a dog?
When Should You Not Get A Puppy?
Puppies are hard work. Some people make it look easy but they are like having a baby. A puppy needs your time. You cannot go to work and leave a puppy on it’s own for 8 hours. If you are not going to be able to give your new dog your full attention, they will pine. Also, if you do not have the time then you will not be able to train your puppy.
If you struggle for money now, then a dog is a big no. You cannot allow your dog to go hungry or not visit the vets. A dog cannot survive on basics like a human can. It requires the right nutrients within it’s food and these change as the dog gets older.
Do you love sleep? As dogs get older they will start to pick up your nightly routine. Unfortunately, a puppy does not. A puppy cannot hold itself like an adult dog. It will want out throughout the night and will also have you up bright and early ready for its morning walk. As a puppy cannot hold itself for very long, you will find yourself out with the pup every hour or two. This is until the puppy is fully trained and learning to hold itself.
Time To Make A Decision.
These are just a few simple things to think about before getting a puppy but there are many more. There are many quizzes you can take online and many articles you can read. You need to remind yourself that a puppy is for life.
